I sent a letter to the BDH in response to this article. But after this idiotic piece was published yesterday, it became apparent that my letter wasn’t going to get printed. So here it is for your enjoyment:
Jake Heimark’s op-ed regarding the so-called shortcomings of Brown’s TWTP program was patently offensive. Students like Mr. Heimark need to be made to see the necessity of racially segregated programs like the many available at Brown. Black people, in particular, need their own space, before settling into Brown’s pervasive white milieu.
Statistically speaking, black kids (and those of certain other minority orientations) do not perform well in school. We need programs like TWTP to inculturate such savages–introduce them slowly to Brown’s culture that they might be productive actors in our mise en scène (a proven method executed benificently by the British unto the Congolese in the late 19th century).
Let’s be honest, it is unseemly for black people and other minorities to be seen associating with white people. We, as prudent students, must continue to support, and even promote, the important work of Dean K, Terry Addison, and Kisa Takesue. The further ghettoization Brown’s minority students must be continued. If not for programs like TWTP we might actually have black students trying to make friends with white students. And we certainly don’t want that, do we?
Beneficent, not benificent, Josh. Funny letter though!
